If you're in Japan you cannot miss Kirishima National Park. With 23 volcanic mountains and 10 crater lakes and many other dramatic views and scenery the park is sure to impress anyone. Kirishima's highest mountain is Karakunidake at 1,700m (5,578 ft) but it's most famous mountain is Takachihonomine 1,574m (5,164 ft.). Legend has it that the grandson of sun goddess Amaterasu and founder of the Japanese Imperial line, Ninigi-No-Mikoto, descended to earth here.
The best place to stay in the park is in the plateau village of Ebino Kogen . This wonderful village offers a central location amongst some of the parks best hiking and is surrounded by wonderful scenery and shopping.
Many will choose to hike down to the nearby crater lakes. There are three of them and the short hike is speckled by wonderful scenery. There are also chances to climb the areas volcanoes. These short day hikes will allow you great views and wonderful opportunities for taking pictures.
You can stay at a hotel or campsite in Ebino Kogen. If you decide to camp then you'll want to bring your own food. There isn't much available in the town unless you're staying at a hotel. Those staying in hotels will find many choices. There are places that offer the lavish experiences and places that offer much simpler lodging. My favorite place to stay is Kokuminshukusha Ebino Kogenso. This government sponsored lodge is perfect because it is cheap. The rooms are simple with just a bed and most rooms don't include a bathroom but the traditional Japanese cooking here is outstanding. Baths are separate for men and women. There are indoor and outdoor baths available for either gender.
The best time of year to visit Kirishma National Park is in the spring and fall. You'll find fewer crowds, perfect hiking weather, and the parks flora is especially elegant during these seasons.
